Inaugural Above & Beyond Awards

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Foundation has started a new award within PBSO called the Above & Beyond Award.  As the name suggests, this award will recognize PBSO employees who go above and beyond in their service to our community.  We know that for every PBSO employee we honor, there are a dozen other deserving candidates, but we feel it’s important to single out some people because all too often there is not enough recognition provided for the outstanding work that they do.

So for our inaugural award ceremony on 12/4/14, we had 2 recipients.  Our first recipient was Deputy Daniel Ganzel.  On October 8th, Deputy Ganzel was off-duty, nursing a broken arm and driving with his wife near Hobe Sound as they went to celebrate their 31st wedding anniversary.  Deputy Ganzel saw a woman on the side of the road and a man running away from the area.  The man then jumped on a bicycle and started to ride away.  Deputy Ganzel drove up to the man and asked what was happening.  The man said, quote, I did nothing to the female.  When Deputy Ganzel spoke to the woman, she told him that she had been jogging when the man grabbed her and tried to sexually assault her.  She fought him, got away, and that’s when Deputy Ganzel drove up and apprehended the suspect.  Thanks to Deputy Ganzel’s selfless actions, a sexual offender was put behind bars.  Deputy Ganzel, the Sheriff’s Foundation thanks you for going Above & Beyond!

Our second recipient was Deputy Brian Fidler.  On June 6th, Deputy Fidler was the first on the scene of a fully engulfed house fire in Lantana.  While running up to the house, he received information that there were 3 small children still inside.  Without hesitation, Deputy Fidler entered the burning house through a side window.  He slowly made his way around, and one by one, he was able to locate the 3 children in the thick smoke and pass them out the window to Deputy Jeff Lawless and Sgt. Neil Honkala.  Thanks to Deputy Fidler’s heroic actions, the children are fine and a family tragedy was averted.  Deputy Fidler, the Sheriff’s Foundation thanks you for going Above & Beyond!
